Emigrant Trail Museum, Truckee, CA

A museum dedicated to the Donner Party, a group of pioneers who wagon trained from the mid-West and got snowbound high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in 1946 and, to survive, restored to cannibalism. Of the 87 members, only 48 survived. The museum is high in the pine laden mountains near where the tragedy occurred. While I am sure that almost everyone who visits does so because of the ghoulish reputation (I did), the US Park Service only devotes a small display to the Donner pioneers. The rest is concerned with geology, surveying, mining, local animals, even an ersatz motel of the 1920s.
