Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, Springfield, IL

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum suffers from the same problems as most similar places: it tries simultaneously to educate and entertain. Typically, educational aspects are skipped over most visitors – in this case a huge display of anti-Lincoln political cartoons of the day. Most people much prefer standing next to the wax figures for photographs. The gift shop reveals the level of attraction which vary from the insipid to the insulting: stuffed puffin dolls to T-shirt of Lincoln doing the splits while playing an electric guitar. Remarkably, the reproduction of a section of the White House has the Blacks outside on the porch looking in at the white people.
